Description: Call2Recycle is a not-for-profit, product stewardship organization focused on the reduction of hazardous waste in compliance with state and national regulations. Snohomish County’s efforts helped the Call2Recycle program collect nearly 8 million pounds of consumer batteries in the United States. Solid Waste diverted more than 32,000 pounds of batteries from area landfills in 2022.

2022 Recycler of the Year Award for Youth Education

Description: This award honors Snohomish County’s work with Waste Management (WM) to educate and engage students around recycling and environmental citizenship. WM educators have provided in-classroom workshops in the county for more than 10 years. When COVID forced schools to close abruptly, WM and the county moved quickly transition to interactive virtual outreach. In 2021, WM educators engaged Snohomish County students in 175 workshops in grades 2 to 11. The virtual workshops supplemented existing curricula related to environmental science.

Description: One of the nation’s premier battery recycling programs, Call2Recycle, has selected Snohomish County Public Works Solid Waste as a recipient of its Top Leader in Sustainability Award. The award recognizes the 100 top performing organizations and businesses that demonstrate a notable commitment to battery collection and recycling. Snohomish County recycled 165,164 pounds of batteries on 2020.

2015 WSACE Program/Project Manager of the Year Award
Awarded by: Washington State Association of County Engineers (WSACE)
Description: Solid Waste Division Director Matt Zybas, was nominated by county colleagues and recognized by WSACE for his outstanding leadership and service in the emergency response and debris removal following the SR 530 landslide. Within the first week after the SR 530 landslide, Matt worked with a group of 30 people consisting of federal, state, and local agencies through a strategy discussion on how to begin cleanup and recovery efforts. Snohomish County, with Matt’s leadership, the help of construction, archaeology and spotting, and monitoring and inspection contractors, successfully completed the project early and under budget.
