Special Preparation Items
At the North County Recycling & Transfer Station and all Drop Boxes, all items must be less than six feet long or smaller than 25 square feet in area, except household sofas, appliances, mattresses, doors, carpets, and rugs.The following wastes require special preparation and/or require Snohomish County Health Department clearance:

Ash | Must be cold and double-bagged. Ash in barrels must be inspected by facility staff prior to disposal. Industrial ash is not accepted |
Asphalt, Brick, Concrete, Dirt, Sod, Sand, Gravel, and Rocks | Up to one full wheelbarrow accepted at Drop Boxes. Larger quantities accepted at Transfer Stations. County facilities accept these items as garbage only. For recycling options, visit the Department of Ecology website, or call their office at 1-800-732-9253 |
Canopies | Accepted as garbage. Metal canopies may be recycled in the scrap metal bin if they are flattened first |
Contaminated Soils Not Designated as Hazardous Waste | Requires prior clearance from the Snohomish County Health Department, call 425-339-5250 |
Dead Animals | 10 pound maximum. Double-bag in plastic and tie tightly |
Fecal Matter | Pet manure only; human feces not accepted. 10 pound maximum. Double-bag in plastic and tie tightly |
Grease-Trap Solids | Solids only, 10 pounds or less. Double-bag in plastic and tie tightly |
Latex Paint | No liquid paint allowed at transfer stations. Open, dried out paint cans are accepted. Latex paint is also accepted if it's first mixed with a paint hardener or kitty litter to make the paint the texture of oatmeal. Liquid latex paint is accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility for a fee |
Metal Containers | To recycle in scrap metal at no charge, containers must be clean, empty (dry), and open to allow full inspection of the interior. Containers that once held flammable liquids are not accepted at our Transfer Stations or Drop Boxes, but will be accepted at our Household Hazardous Waste Facility |
Sewer Treatment Plant Screenings and Grit | Requires Snohomish County Health Department clearance, call 425-339-5250 |
Tires | Limit five tires per customer, per day, at regular garbage rates. Passenger car and pick up truck size only. Call 425-388-3425 for disposal options of larger loads |
Yard Debris / Clean Wood Debris | Effective September 21, 2022, Snohomish County will temporarily stop accepting yard debris at all facilities. Alternate locations for your yard/wood debris disposal/recycling can be found at our Yard/Clean Wood Debris page. |
