Esperance

Esperance

Project Description:

Note: The park is closed for the duration of the project.

Snohomish County Parks & Recreation is currently planning for improvements to Esperance Park including the recently acquired adjacent 3.4 acre parcel, formerly owned by the Edmonds School District. In order to provide additional recreation opportunities and incorporate recent park expansion, a Renovation Plan is being developed for the park. Initial community input has been gathered through multiple meetings with the Friends of Esperance Park and public meetings. Ideas for park improvements generated by community input and preliminary design work include:

  • New accessible walking path network
  • New off-leash dog area
  • Parking lot
  • Playground replacement & relocation
  • New multipurpose sport court & community gathering space
  • New community garden / pea patch
  • Little league field enhancements
  • Stormwater treatment/habitat area
  • Forest playground
  • Woodland & trail enhancements

A consultant was selected and completed design development, permitting and implementation of planned improvements. A preferred conceptual plan was presented to the County Council members in attendance at the operations committee meeting on 9 Aug 2016. Construction of improvements began August of 2019.

All acquisitions, plans and site developments are subject to funding availability and subject to Snohomish County Executive and County Council approval.

Current Status:

Updated Feb 2020

  • Contractor has control of the park during construction and the park has been signed “No Trespassing” and is enforceable. This shall remain in effect for the duration of construction
  • The contractor has been granted a contract extension due to weather complications, vandalism to concrete and availability of a qualified playground installer.
  • A Change Order is also being implemented which shall add a half-court basketball / full pickleball court, with post inserts and striping, to the project.
  • A Zip Line ride has been purchased and is being installed courtesy of a grant from the Hazel Miller Foundation. It has been partially installed in the forested portion of the park. It will be operable when its seat is attached following the installation of the fall-safety surfacing that is being coordinated with the new playground.
  • Our anticipated opening date, pending any issues, is now 1 April 2020. Really, No fooling.
