About the Road Divisions

The Engineering ServicesTransportation and Environmental Services, and Road Maintenance divisions work together to maintain and improve more than 1,600 miles of roadway and more than 200 bridges within unincorporated Snohomish County.


Whether it is clearing the roads during a winter snowstorm, constructing road improvements during the summer, planning road improvements to accommodate growth, or coordinating traffic light synchronization throughout the year, these three divisions of Public Works keep residents moving. 


Team Focus

The roads team focuses on:

  1. Maintaining the transportation infrastructure and managing all unincorporated roadways, bridges, bike lanes, traffic signals, culverts, and more
  2. Ensuring optimal traffic flow, reliability and safety on county roads
  3. Identifying new transportation project needs
  4. Delivering capital projects
  5. Continuing environmental stewardship and sustainability
  6. Prioritizing public involvement to achieve community-focused solutions
  7. Obtaining federal, state and local grants

Responsibilities

Public Works is responsible for the operation, maintenance, preservation and construction of:

  • Roads and bridges, including chip sealing and pothole repair, snowplowing, sanding and sweeping
  • Sidewalks, crosswalks and bike lanes
  • Traffic control assets including intersection signals, roundabouts, striping and signage
  • Catch basins and stormwater facilities
  • Vegetation management

Additional Services

The roads team is constantly working on the county’s growing transportation infrastructure. Additional services it provides internally and to the public include:

  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility programs
  • Geotechnical work
  • Survey and mapping of county areas
  • Environmental permitting and mitigation monitoring
