Your first appearance on a criminal matter is called an arraignment. At that time, you will be advised of your rights and will be asked to enter a plea. If you enter a plea of not guilty, the matter will be set for trial. If you enter a plea of guilty, you may be sentenced at that time or the judge may elect to continue the sentencing to a later date.
If you feel you need a court appointed attorney, please request one of the court at the time of your first appearance or visit the division of the court in which your case is filed. Please be advised that court staff are prohibited from providing legal advice (PDF).
