INDEX, Wash. - Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit (SAR) recovered the body of a hiker yesterday afternoon with the unit’s helicopter, SnoHawk. The 30 year-old male from Everett was found by rescuers about 70 feet below the area where he had been hiking with his brother on Friday. SAR located the deceased in an area that is described as steep, treacherous terrain, down a narrow slot “chimney”.
The men were “wayfinding” along a rough trail to Lake Stimms near Merchant Peak east of Index and north of Highway 2 when they became separated and lost voice contact with each other. One of the men called 911 when his brother did not arrive at the end point of the hike.
SAR personnel unsuccessfully attempted to recover the victim’s body on Sunday.
