Lieutenant Craig Hess Selected as New Sultan Police Chief

SULTAN, Wash. – The City of Sultan and the Snohomish County Sheriff ‘s Office announce Lieutenant Craig Hess as the new Sultan Police Chief. The City of Sultan contracts with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office to provide police services. 


The appointment, beginning September 14, comes after Lieutenant Nathan Alanis was selected as Police Chief for the City of Snohomish. 


Lt. Craig Hess brings extensive knowledge and leadership experience gained throughout his 22 years of law enforcement service and 10 years in the fire service. He began his public safety career in 1996 for the Baldwin Fire Department where he worked his way up the ranks to Deputy Fire Chief. In 2001, Hess began his law enforcement career for the New York City Police Department. On September 11, 2001, Hess was a first responder at the World Trade Center where he worked for weeks following the attack. In 2006, Hess moved to Snohomish County and joined the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office as a patrol deputy. Throughout his career, he has served as a school resource officer at Sultan High School, worked patrol in east county and served the contract city of Darrington. In 2020, Hess was promoted to a sergeant and selected as the Police Chief in Gold Bar where he has worked the past three years.

I am committed to prioritizing public trust and will deliver professional law enforcement services to our east county residents and visitors.” 


Lt. Hess has worked in law enforcement for more than 22 years and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Plattsburg State University.
