Community Shelter Build and Raising for Parks May 21-27
In partnerships with the Timber Framers Guild – Shelter raising event May 26
EVERETT, Wash., May 14, 2019 – Snohomish County Parks, Recreation & Tourism (SCPRT) is partnering with the Timber Framers Guild (TFG) to build and raise two park shelters and one stage for Snohomish County park properties. The event will include a teaching workshop by TFG members for local volunteers and conclude with a shelter raising finale on May 26 at Lake Roesiger Park.
The TFG will host a 7-day Community Building Workshop from May 21 through May 24 at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds overseen by Senior Park Planner Thomas Hartzel, under the direction of SCPRT Director Tom Teigen. Around 35 local community volunteers of various skill levels will work alongside five timber frame professionals. The volunteers will learn heavy timber layout, safe cutting techniques (using hand and power tools) and ancient to modern fastening systems. They will build three separate structures: two identical 24’ x 30’ covered open picnic shelters slated for Lake Roesiger County Park and Whitehorse County Park and a small 8’ x 12’ stage for Kayak Point County Park. Volunteer registration has closed; public viewing and listening drop-ins are allowed in designated areas from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. during the workshop (14405 179th Ave. SE, Pavilion Building 600, Monroe, WA).
The TFG, with the SCPRT, and a handful of the volunteers from the build workshop will raise the Lake Roeisger Park shelter on Sunday, May 26 beginning at 9am. The event is expected to go anywhere until 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The raise event will be similar to that of a traditional barn raising. The TFG and SCPRT welcomes the public to watch; carpooling is encouraged as parking is very limited (1608 S Lake Roesiger Rd, Snohomish, WA 98290). *Media can park just south of the general parking entrance at 1824 S Lake Roesiger Rd in “media” marked areas.*
“Having the Timer Framers Guild out in our parks completely aligns with what we like to do: enrich lives with great public spaces, build community and educate future stewards of our beautiful public lands,” echoed Teigen.
A “Kid’s Build Event” will occur at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe on Sunday, May 26 from 10:00 a.m-5:00 p.m. kids will be building picnic benches for the shelter. The Kid’s Build is open to ages 8-15 with a $25 suggested donation registration fee that includes lunch. Parents and/or guardians must sign up children in advance at www.TFGuild.org.
“When the community comes together and works alongside each other, great things happen,” said Councilmember Sam Low. “Anytime you visit Lake Roesiger Park you can look at this shelter and feel a deep sense of community ownership of our beautiful park space. A place we built together for each other.”
The shelter for Whitehorse Park is scheduled to be installed in 2020. More information about the Timber Framers Guild can be found at TFGuild.org.
