Mountain Loop Highway Seasonal Closure Begins Friday, Dec. 3
Snohomish County Public Works and U.S. Forest Service to close road between Deer Creek Gate and Bedal Creek Gate
EVERETT, Wash., Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2020 – With the snow hitting the ground in higher elevations, Snohomish County Public Works, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, will close Mountain Loop Highway beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3. The closure is for traffic in both directions and will be officially enforced from the Deer Creek Gate to the west and the Bedal Creek Gate to the east.
“Snohomish County Public Works has consulted with the U.S. Forest Service, Darrington, Granite Falls and our other partners to make sure this is the right time to close the highway,” Snohomish County Public Works Director Kelly Snyder said. “We don’t want to wait any longer as snow has started to accumulate in the higher elevations. Our number one priority is to keep motorist safe as they travel throughout the county.”
A stretch of the road, 14 miles, is gravel and closed each winter due to snow and road conditions. Each spring, the Road Maintenance Division coordinates with the U.S. Forest Service to perform any necessary maintenance on the road prior to its reopening.
During the summer months, more than 100 cars on average use this route each day with up to 200 cars traveling each day on the weekend.
