Snohomish County Public Works Engineers Share In-House Developed Tools to Manage Projects during Statewide Conference

Tools track projects design processes from start to finish to keep projects on track and within budget

EVERETT, Wash., Oct. 5, 2022 – Two Snohomish County Public Works engineers will share their unique processes and in-house developed tools that the county uses in complex engineering projects at the state American Public Works Association (APWA) Washington chapter conference Oct. 5-7 in Spokane. These tools benefit the project area residents by keeping projects on-track, within budget and including public comments from surveys/open houses.

Public Works Design Supervisors Sam Filetti and Polly Brooks will share their expertise with tips in their presentation, “The Design Process at Snohomish County; From A to Z,” that the Engineering Services Division uses to track a public project’s progress from design to completion. Their in-house products, “Design Memo Template and Style Guide” and “Design Development Checklist (30-60-90),” help projects stay on track, within budget and include multiple steps for design, construction and various areas of review, and public comments. The engineers will make their presentation to their peers in other agencies enabling them to learn and improve their own engineering processes.

Public works directors, engineers, and managers in public works agencies around the state are expected to attend this week’s conference.

“It is rewarding to be able to share what we have learned with our fellow engineers at the conference,” Filetti said. “Collaborating with other professionals at conferences like the APWA is a great way to ensure we keep ourselves accountable and do our best work by making the best use of public funds and resources.”

Both Filetti and Brooks have more than 30 years engineering experience having worked in various government agencies at the municipal, county and state levels.

The APWA is an international educational and professional association of public agencies, private sector companies, and individuals dedicated to providing high quality public works goods and services. It was originally chartered in 1937.
